What is the difference between general holidays and statutory holidays?
General holidays (17 days) apply to banks, government, schools and many companies; statutory holidays (14 days) under the Employment Ordinance apply to all employees. The two overlap but differ — check your contract and the Labour Department for your entitlement.
Why do some holidays say "the day following"?
When a festival falls on a Sunday, the following day is designated as a substitute holiday, so the Gazette lists it as "the day following". In 2026, Ching Ming, Buddha's Birthday and Chung Yeung all fall on Sundays.
Can I add these to my phone calendar?
Yes. Use "Download iCal" above to get an .ics file and open it in Apple, Android or Google Calendar to import the whole year. You can also subscribe to the official 1823 iCal calendar.
